A Common Yellowthroat that won't make it to Mexico

A Common Yellowthroat that won’t make it to Mexi0

En route to Gettysburg PA, I passed this little fellow, freshly dead, and I thought of the contrasting fortunes that fate can bestow. Common Yellowthroats winter from the Gulf States south into Mexico. A few years back, one was blown across the Atlantic, making landfall on Loop Head in County Clare. It became an overnight celebrity, seen by hundreds. This fellow met a more dismal end, and the lack of dignity in his death disturbed me. As I lay prone to take a photograph, a state trooper pulled over to check that I too was not dead. After making some awkward excuses, I placed the bird in a more fitting location and continued south to Gettysburg.
