Star Island September 2011

Star Island September 2011

Star Island boasts a list of over 250 recorded bird species and is THE place to witness bird migration in New Hampshire. On previous trips, we have seen King Eider, White-eyed Vireo, Sedge Wren, Connecticut Warbler, Clay-colored Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Dickcissel, and Yellow-headed Blackbird. In 2015, we found a state-first Lazuli Bunting, in 2016 a state-second Chuck-wills-widow, and in 2017, a state and New England-first Western Wood-Pewee.

The $300 rate includes accommodation, all meals, and transport to and from the island. It is a terrific deal, and 2018 will be the 6th year of Birding Conferences since the first in 2013. Both spring and fall weekends are during peak time for migrants, but if the birding is quiet, it is a great place to watch for seabirds, with all four shearwaters, jaegers, and phalaropes possible. Weather permitting, at night I will be setting up recording equipment to track nocturnal migration. We arrive on island Friday afternoon, and depart Sunday afternoon, with specific times available closer to the departure date.

My son Jamie and I are registered for the birding weekend in May, and as I told you, I’m chaplain for the Natural History Week in June. Will we be getting a schedule for the May trip with times to meet the ferry, etc.? Thanks. Judith
