The recent warm southerly airflow and advancing cold fronts are two weeks too early for my liking, but beggars cant be choosers. Astounding numbers of hawks reported from the Monadnock Area on the April 26, 2011 reached my doorstep on the 27th. I was only a few hundred yards from my driveway very early in the morning when I disturbed what must have been a communal roost of American Kestrels – not something I would have suspected them of doing! Anyway, like bees from a beehive I saw birds scattering in all directions. They were too quick to count, but certainly at least 8 and probably more. Very unusual for the area.
A couple of continuing gadwall, american wigeon, and ring-necked ducks at Hinsdale, and this Caspian Tern at Meadow Pond, also on the 27th.
