slow weekend

I hit a few more local spots this weekend – CT River on Sat, and Concord area fields on Sunday. CT river has a good variety of waterfowl for autumn (usually lousy at this time of year, birds mostly flyover), due mainly to the excellent habitat at Hinsdale (low water). Ring-necked duck with good numbers of both species of teal, and a flock of canada geese migrating high with two pintail (always great to see migrating waterfowl). Pied-billed grebes continue in good numbers. No sign of the moorhen – I have a suspicion that one of the peregrines took it – when I saw the moorhen on Wednesday, I turned away to get my camera and could never refind the bird. Not long afterward, I noticed the two peregrines.

Sunday was really slow in Concord (community gardens, Goldstar Sod Farm, etc). Pipits coming through (flocks of about 20 in Canterbury and Horseshoe), along with about 60 ring-billed gulls in latter. Good sparrow numbers at the garden but nothing unusual. Till Thursday and a massively high tide, when I will be trying for clapper and yellow rail in Hampton.
