Powder Mill Pond – coastiness continues in Hancock

The flats on Powder Mill Pond continue to attract, and hold birds. Today, Wednesday September 9th, brought the 11th and 12th shorebird species of the season – American Golden-Plover and Pectoral Sandpiper. Just one more species to tie the 2011 tally. A cold front tonight augurs well for tomorrow.

Totals today:

  • Blue-winged Teal – 2
  • Green-winged Teal – 36
  • Killdeer – 11
  • American Golden-Plover – 3 (inc. 2 adults)
  • Semipalmated Plover – 19 (juv)
  • Lesser Yellowlegs – 1
  • Greater Yellowlegs – 2 (the rest likely roosting on southern most section of pond adjacent to South Elmwood)
  • Solitary Sandpiper – 2
  • Spotted Sandpiper – 1
  • Pectoral Sandpiper – 4 (juv)
  • Baird’s Sandpiper – 2 (juv)
  • Least Sandpiper – 12 (juv)
  • Semipalmated Sandpiper – 0 (two yesterday)
  • Merlin – 1
  • Bald Eagle – 4
  • Osprey – 1
