Interesting intra-state goose migration

Geese are one of the genera whose migratory pathways are better understood, and this is increasingly the case with the advent of satellite telemetry. Battery weight still precludes the use of satellite transponders on small passerines and shorebirds, which form the bulk of the continents long distance migrants.

That said, they are expensive to use and so there is much more we dont know about geese that we do know, especially at the local level. Thus I was intrigued when JoAnn Russo directed me to her blog to view photos of the recent NH state first pink-footed goose in Walpole, NH (unfortunately but not unsurprisingly, a one-day wonder).  Also on her site was the following photo – http://tinyurl.com/3jlhzd7 of an aberrant Canada Goose (interesting in its own right but that’s another story).

Len Medlock took a photo of undoubtedly the same bird at Chapman’s Landing in Stratham, NH http://www.pbase.com/lmedlock/image/133148792 about two weeks earlier. I would not have guessed there to be much cross state goose traffic, but this suggests otherwise.
